Rebuilding a PMO around the work customers needed done

A large enterprise portfolio needed better commitment reliability while project managers, delivery teams, and leaders required very different kinds of support.

reported increase in projects meeting commitments

Why it matters

The PMO became a service architecture for improving flow and decisions, rather than primarily a reporting and compliance layer.

01

The challenge

A control-oriented PMO could gather data without resolving systemic causes of missed commitments. Project managers also spent substantial time navigating administration instead of managing delivery.

02

The diagnosis

One standard PMO service could not solve three different jobs: relieving administration, helping teams choose and apply fit-for-purpose delivery methods, and helping leaders remove system-level constraints.

03

The intervention

The team designed services at three altitudes: administrative concierge and data support for project managers; method selection and delivery consulting for teams; and leadership workshops focused on root causes and whole-system performance.

04

The reported result

Areas adopting the services reported a 50% increase in projects meeting original commitments. Project-manager administration was reported to fall by two-thirds, and commitment performance was described as roughly twice the industry average.
